Your bank statement as a gambling diary: how to make your casino transactions visible

Memory is unreliable when gambling: wins stick, losses blur. A bank statement does not forget. How to turn three months of statements into a five-minute overview that shows the real cost.

Ask yourself how much you spent at casinos last month, and answer before you look anywhere. Then open your bank statement. Most people are wrong, and wrong in the same direction: they think they spent less. That is not lying. Memory keeps wins and forgets losses, and small deposits add up unnoticed.

A bank statement is the simplest gambling diary, because it is kept for you and cannot make itself look nicer. In this article we show how to read it in five minutes once a month, what to look for and what to do if what you see bothers you.

Why a statement beats memory or the casino's history

A casino's history shows only that casino. If you play at three, the data is in three places, and bonuses, conversions and cancelled withdrawals blur the picture. A bank statement is in one place and complete: every deposit and every withdrawal from all casinos, with date and time. It is also your own document, which you do not have to ask anyone for.

Step 1: download the last three months of statements

Many banks let you download a statement as a file, such as CSV, which opens in a spreadsheet, or as a PDF. Take three months: one month is too short to see a pattern, and three gives a baseline. If you have several accounts or cards that you use at casinos, download statements for all of them.

Step 2: tag the casino transactions

Go through the statement and mark the rows linked to gambling. Here is a trick worth knowing: a bank-link payment's description may not contain the casino's name. Often the description carries the name of the payment provider or the operating company. If you are not sure what a row means, compare the date and amount with the casino's own transaction history, or look at the time you actually played. Explanation of the terms: bank payment and Trustly. What a Trustly payment actually does is explained on the page How Trustly works.

Mark two types of rows:

  • Deposits (money leaves the account).
  • Withdrawals (money comes back from the casino).

Do not mark bonuses: they do not appear on the statement, because bonus money does not move through a bank account. That matters, because in the casino's history you may see a "win" that the bank does not show, and the reverse.

Step 3: calculate the monthly result

Add up each month's deposits and withdrawals. Then:

Monthly result = withdrawals − deposits.

If the number is negative, that is your real price for that month's entertainment. Compare it with your budget. If you have not yet set a budget, now is the time: the freespin.ee budget guide explains how, and the bankroll planner works it out.

Two cautions when interpreting:

  • Withdrawals can be delayed. If you requested a withdrawal on the last day of the month and it arrived on the first of the next, it still belongs in the result. Look at the whole period, not just the month.
  • A balance still at the casino is not on the statement. If you have 200 euros of balance at a casino, it is not a "win" until it is in your bank account. More on withdrawal speed and timing is in Trustly withdrawal times.

Step 4: look for patterns, not just the total

The total is only one number. Patterns say more. Go through the statement again and answer five questions:

  1. How many deposits did you make in a day? Several small deposits on the same day is a typical sign that one big decision has been split into several small ones, which feels like less.
  2. At what time of day did deposits come? Night-time deposits after a loss are among the best-known warning signs.
  3. Are deposits growing month to month? Growth without income growth means a rising share of your money.
  4. How many withdrawals are there compared with deposits? If you regularly make a withdrawal and put it back the same day, the withdrawal is effectively cancelled. There is a thorough article on this on our sister site: reversing a withdrawal.
  5. Do deposits come straight after payday or before bills fall due? Both are a sign that gambling is competing with necessary costs.

It helps to sort the result into three categories:

  • Green: the result is within budget, deposits are few and planned.
  • Yellow: the result is near the limit, or deposits are made unexpectedly and several on one day.
  • Red: the result exceeds the budget, you are using money meant for something else, or you are hiding it from those close to you.

In yellow or red, take the self-assessment and read the responsible gambling page. The article Responsible gambling: limits, breaks and self-exclusion is also a practical next step.

Step 5: set limits where the money leaves

A casino's settings are one layer of protection. The second, and often stronger, is your own bank. In your internet bank set a daily transaction limit at a level that covers your real everyday costs but does not let a single night send through a whole month's pay. Some banks let you temporarily lower a limit or block certain payment types; check your bank's settings. General information on Estonian banking and security is on the Estonian Banking Association's site, and Eesti Pank gives an overview of the financial system.

A bank-based limit is asymmetric in the same way as a casino's limits: lowering is quick, raising takes time. A good trick is to set the limit a little below your real need, so that the whole amount is never available at once.

What to do if the statement frightens you

The first reaction is often shame, and shame makes people keep quiet. But the fact that you looked at the statement at all is already a strong step. Some next steps:

  1. Put limits in place at the casino and at the bank, on the same day.
  2. Take a break or consider self-exclusion. Help is available in Estonia too: the helpline 15410, the National Institute for Health Development and peaasi.ee.
  3. Talk to someone. A friend, a family member or a professional. Money that has been lost cannot be won back by playing; that is the gambler's fallacy.
  4. Check your debts and bills before a new deposit.

Finally: the monthly result table is not a punishment. It is a mirror. You can make the same overview every month in five minutes, and when it is your routine, the numbers never surprise you. When you choose a casino, first look at our methodology page and the selection of Estonian-licensed casinos, where mandatory limits and the self-exclusion register apply.

Frequently asked questions

Do casino transactions appear on the statement under the casino's name?

Not always. The description may carry the payment provider's or the operating company's name. Compare the date and amount with the casino's own transaction history.

How often should I look at the statement?

Once a month is enough if the result is green. If you notice yellow or red, look weekly until the pattern is clear.

Can my bank see that I gamble?

A bank sees the payments and their recipients, because they are its own transactions. But the statement is just your own working tool: you do not have to share notes made from it with anyone.
